Interrupted by the scourge that is Naples mold

Naples, Florida represents everything “old Florida”. Long front porches facing west to view the spectacular sunsets over the horizon, lush fields, and an old-world feel all define Naples. Don’t let your piece of Americana be interrupted by the scourge that is Naples mold. There are many steps to a proper Naples mold assessment and Naples mold remediation, and Naples is no exception to that rule. Naples folklore is full of old wives tales about secret methods to remove the odor and damage caused by humidity-driven Naples mold. Vinegar, Bleach, and aerosol-sprays might curtail the aroma and appearance of the Naples mold damage, but ultimately homeowners that use these methods are just putting perfume on a skunk. The skunk doesn’t go away, and neither does the Naples mold.

Naples’s tropical climate poses a unique threat to healthy indoor air because of its high humidity. Biological growth is common in air-conditioned buildings, where moisture and dust in ventilation systems create ideal conditions for microbial contamination, including Naples mold and bacteria. Changes in building design and operations may increase exposure levels to higher concentrations of a variety of air pollutants. Negative health effects from poor air quality, from allergies to harmful disease, can occur.

One of the unique strengths is specialized knowledge of biological contaminant identification, removal and control in tropical climates by licensed Naples mold professionals. When a Licensed Naples Mold Remediator evaluation reveals active or potential microbial contaminant sources, air sampling and analysis is conducted to document the extent of contaminants, as well as potential hazards to occupant health. A third party Naples mold-assessor samples the areas of concern, which are then analyzed by a scientist at a certified laboratory to assure homeowners unbiased results and the highest degree of accuracy.

With growing evidence and liability associated with the adverse health effects of Naples mold and the bio-deterioration of property caused by colonized Naples mold growth, it is now more important then ever to face this situation head on. Hundreds of cases against properties in Naples surface every month.

Isn’t it time to establish a Standard of Care for your property?

    H2O 911 Restoration - Naples Mold Remediation

Ten things you can do to prevent Naples mold from growing inside your home

First and foremost; if anything gets wet in your home; dry it out with air movement and dehumidification if necessary. The idea is to draw moisture out of materials like drywall and wood products

Second; maintain your Air conditioning unit. The A/C equipment not only cools but also dehumidifies your home. Put an Naples antimicrobial tab in your A/C drain pan, change the return filters every 30-60 days, keep the drain lines clear with a shop vacuum and keep the cooling coils and compressor coils clean.

Third; Vent your attic space and check the A/C ducting for cold air leaks. Cold air in a hot attic causes condensation and can wet you insulation and the back of your drywall ceilings.

Fourth; Calk and seal all wall penetrations to prevent warm moist air from contacting the cool dry air in your home. Condensation again.

Fifth; insulate all cold water pipes in potentially warm places. This will prevent “sweating” and wet materials will support Naples Mold Damage growth. If your home is older consider a re- pipe to prevent pin-hole water leaks behind your walls.

Sixth; Keep you’re A/C set no higher than80 degrees and if you have a humidistat keep that set at 55% or lower. I prefer that you set the Humidistat to ON all the time. This keeps it out of the picture.

Seventh; when you go away for more than two days, shut your water main off at the main. This will absolutely prevent plumbing leaks while you are away. Be sure to open the breaker for your electric water heater.

Eighth; Keep warm moist air out of your home. Seal all wall penetrations and outlet and switch covers, calk all windows and door, replace sweeps on exterior doors, Keep the air moving in your home. Run ceiling fans on low. On cooler dry days open all the doors and windows and use nature to dry out everything.

Ninth; Move all furniture and book case 4 inches away from walls so that air can circulate behind the furniture. Hang pictures and mirrors so that some air can get behind the hanging. Opt for tiled floors wherever possible, carpet traps and holds humidity.

And Tenth; Do an inspection of the under sink and vanity cabinets. Sniff the air. If you smell a musty smell it may be the beginnings of Naples mold growth. Look for staining on the ceilings and walls. Inspect the base boards and crown moldings.

If you see or smell anything you suspect might be Naples Mold Damage, call a professional Naples mold remediation contractor. Look for a Naples Mold Remediation Contractor who also is a water damage and reconstruction expert. Look for certifications by industry regulators such as IICRC and IAQA. Ask for a written estimate for any Naples mold remediation job and ask who on their staff is certified as a Naples mold Remediator.

Living with Naples mold – Naples Allergy Issues

People with allergies and Naples mold sensitivity have a difficult time during allergy season but even in the winter months the symptoms can linger. Sometimes the source of the allergic reaction can be inside their personal living space.

Naples Mold spores are in the outdoor air all the time and just coming and going, in and out, of our own Naples homes lets outdoor air and Naples mold spores inside. When a Naples mold spore lands on a food source, such as drywall or wood, and has sufficient moisture it will begin to grow on that surface. Once the Naples mold spore grows into a colony and reproduces, the source of the Naples mold spores and related allergen are now inside your home.

Naples Mold has been linked to many health conditions. Some of these are well-documented. Others are still unproven. Most everyone has some of the symptoms attributed to Naples mold some of the time.

Several state government agencies list conditions that can be caused or made worse by Naples mold exposure. Some experts say more research is needed before it can be determined if some of the conditions listed below are linked to Naples mold.

Conditions attributed to Naples mold include:

    - Allergy to Naples mold – Naples Mold allergy has been well documented. We test for it in our office, as do most allergists. Symptoms can include runny nose, itchy eyes, wheezing, and skin rashes. Allergic fungal sinusitis is also a form of mold allergy.

    - Infections – Usually infection from Naples mold occurs only in persons on chemotherapy or with diseases which may make them more susceptible to infection. Skin, eyes, and lungs are often affected. Aspergillis is the most notable fungus to cause infection (aspergillosis), but others have been associated with infections also.

    - Irritation of the mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory system.

    - Trigeminal nerve effects have been associated with mold, and have been reported to cause pain, decreased attention, disorientation, diminished reflex time, and dizziness.

    - Volatile compounds (VOCS) produced by Naples mold are thought to cause headache, attention deficit, inability to concentrate, and dizziness.

    - It is uncertain whether exposure over time to Naples moldy odors can desensitize an individual so they have less perception of all odors, or cause them to be more highly irritated by odors.

    - Some Naples molds (fungi) produce toxins or poisons

    - Toxic Naples molds can suppress the immune system, or damage intestines, skin, or lungs. They can increase susceptibility to cancer. They can cause blood vessels in the skin or lungs to rupture.

    - Toxic Naples molds are reported to cause nausea and diarrhea, depression, headaches, tremors, kidney problems, and infertility.

    - Penicillium is a toxic Naples mold which has been linked with kidney damage and has been shown to be carcinogenic (cancer-producing) in laboratory animals.

    - Aspergillis is the most toxic Naples mold according to some sources. Some of the toxins produced by aspergillis are reported to cause liver cancer and damage other vital organs.

    - Stachybotrys is the Naples mold usually thought of in “sick building syndrome.” It is being investigated as a cause of hemorrhage in the lungs of infants It has been associated with runny nose, cough, flu-like symptoms, skin irritation in areas of heavy perspiration such as the armpits, headaches, hair loss, malaise, chronic fatigue, depression, yeast infections, and urinary tract infections.

If you experience symptoms that are unusual or out of sync with the seasons you may want to have an Naples air quality test performed. This will tell if there is a source of Naples mold spores from inside your home. If you do have and elevated spore count in your home hire an Indoor air Quality Association (IAQA) certified Naples mold Remediation Company to remove the Naples mold and clean the surfaces and “scrub” the air in your home.

  • Naples Molds reproduce by launching very tiny mold spores into the air May 15, 2010

    H2O 911 Restoration - Naples Mold Remediation

Naples Molds reproduce by launching very tiny mold spores into the air

Naples Molds reproduce by launching very tiny mold spores (seeds) into the air. Naples Mold spores can be as small as .05 microns and they are very aerodynamic. Normal

breezes and air movement keep spore in the air for long periods of time. But… when the Naples mold spores land on a damp spot or wet material indoors they may begin to grow. Southwest

Florida Mold’s favorite foods are wood and paper. Our home have lots of wood, in structural, furnishings and trim materials; and paper as the covering on drywall and wall paper. So when Southwest

Florida mold begins to grow on wood product surfaces in our homes it is literally eating and digesting these materials.

When moisture or high humidity exists in a home, particularly if the problem is undiscovered or not addressed, Naples mold growth can occur.

There is no practical way to keep Naples mold spores from entering your home. Every time you open a door or window spores blow in to your home. The only way to prevent and control

Central Florida mold growth from occurring in your indoor environment is to control the humidity in your indoor air.

The process of cooling your home with an air conditioning unit will normally keep the humidity in your home below 55%. Also air movement from the A/C unit and ceiling fans will help to discourage

Naples mold spores from landing and will create evaporation of surface moisture. You can also keep moisture out of your home by caulking any cracks and places where moist outside air

might leak inside and bring higher humidity and condensation. Keep you’re A/C evaporator drain line clear to prevent drain pan leaks on your ceilings. Have you’re A/C technician check your supply

ducts, especially flex duct, for small air leaks. This cool air will cause condensation when it contacts the warm moist air in your attic space. This may cause moisture to wet the back of your

ceiling drywall. Replace worn sweeps on exterior doors to prevent warm moist air from entering. Inspect the weep holes in your windows to insure that rain water can drain to the outside. Insulate

any piping exposed to the inside environment (toilets and under sinks) to prevent condensation. Be sure your dryer and bath exhaust fans are vented to the outside. Not to the attic space.

People often report condensation on the inside of their windows in the winter. When you see this condensation occur wipe the moisture with a towel. Remember that when we have to use the heater

capacity of or A/C system the system is not dehumidifying the indoor air. During these times we either should run our A/C unit or provide another source of dehumidification. A room dehumidifier

will help and running ceiling fans will also provide evaporation. These moisture control measures will help you prevent Naples mold growth in your home.

If you do see Naples mold growth in your home call a local Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) certified Naples Mold remediation and Water Damage contractor. The IAQA and

IICRC guidelines for mold removal and cleaning are technical and specific. The designation CMR Certified Naples Mold Remediator and CMI Certified Naples Mold Inspector are the

sign of a professional and qualified Naples Mold remediation and Water restoration Company. All Naples mold removal and cleaning should be performed in a contained area under

a negative pressure to protect the health and safety of your home and family health.

The logical last step to insure a Naples mold remediation and cleaning has been effective is an air clearance of your indoor air quality by a CIE (Certified Indoor Environmentalist).

This test will definitively tell if there is a source of Naples mold spores inside your home. This test is also a useful documentation of a complete and effective remediation of a

    Naples mold problem.

  • Importance of Documentation and Certification if you have Naples Mold Issues April 4, 2010

    H2O 911 Restoration - Naples Mold Remediation

It is a seller’s responsibility to disclose problems with a home at the time of sale. For a Naples mold problem you must have documentation that the Naples mold growth was properly and completely removed. This documentation can be a paid invoice from a certified Naples Mold Remediation Company detailing the protocol or methods used to remove the mold problem or Air testing results from a certified Air Quality laboratory.

When you have Naples mold growth in your home a professional Naples Mold Remediation and Water Damage Restoration Company should be hired to:

    1. Determine where the water entered your home that caused the Naples mold growth. Make sure the source of the intrusion is fixed and that the materials that were wet are now dry. If not then to dry them.

    2. Through inspection and testing determine the extent of the Naples mold growth and what areas are affected and not affected. Protect any non affected areas with containment and negative air flow.

    3. Remove all Naples mold affected materials while protecting the occupants of the home, the workers and the home owner’s possessions.

    4. Clean and sanitize affected surfaces following IICRC S520 guidelines and methods.

If the Naples mold growth is extensive there is a possibility that mold spores are air borne and that the A/C system and ducting may be affected. In this situation air testing is recommended to determine the type of Naples mold and the spore count in the air as compared to the spore count in the outside air and the air in non affected.

The process of Naples mold remediation includes:

    - Set up containment with negative air pressure.

    - Cap and isolate A/C system from no affected areas.

    - Equip Naples mold removal workers with Personal Protective equipment.

    - Carefully cut out all mold affected materials two feet past visible mold. Follow cuts with HEPA vacuum. Double bag and remove all mold affected materials to outside for disposal.

    - Follow IICRC S520 guidelines or CIE (Certified Indoor Environmentalist) protocol for HEPA vacuuming and wipe down.

    - “SCRUB” the air with a HEPA filtration unit.

A home owner in your town recently asked me why he cannot just paint over our cut out and throw away a 2X2 foot spot of Naples mold growing on the ceiling in the laundry room. The mold was caused by an overflow from his A/C condensation pan under the air handler in the attic space.

The answer has several parts but first taking action to prevent a reoccurrence is paramount. The A/C drain pan probably overflowed because the drain line was clogged or obstructed. The A/C condensate pan is like a culture dish in your attic. Naples Mold spores are present in the air almost all the time. All they need to grow is water and a food material. The A/C condensate pan is wet most of the time. Any biological material that falls into the pan will supply the food and grow a slime Naples mold. This slime mold clumps up and blocks the drain line and when enough water backs up into the pan it overflows onto the insulation below and eventually onto the back of your drywall which is your ceiling below. There are two important actions you can take to prevent future overflows and subsequent water and mold damage.

    1. Ask your A/C service technician to put an antimicrobial tablet into the A/C condensate drain pan. This tablet will discourage Naples mold growth and help to keep the drain line clear.

2.Attach a wet/dry vacuum to the drain line outside your home where it drains onto the ground. It is a PVC pipe with a “P” trap bend on the end. Do this quarterly and you will most likely never have a blockage again.

First: Why can’t I paint the Naples mold spot with kilz paint and just cover it over? Kilz does not kill, it just covers. The Naples mold will continue to grow in and on the back of the drywall, on the studs or roof trusses and on the plywood decking in the attic space and on the paper backing of the insulation. Appling a sealer to drywall will also slow the drying process and the Naples mold will stay viable longer. Any further wetting or high humidity will jump start the Naples mold growth and it will spread to adjacent building materials.

Second: The affected drywall must be cut out bagged and thrown away. Not just the visible growth but 2 feet beyond the visible. The wet insulation in the attic should be thrown away. The drywall should be cut inside containment with negative pressure. In plain language, a sheet of 6 mil poly is set up to isolate the growth area from the rest of the home space. Ideally, an air scrubber, a unit that filters the air through a HEPA filter, is attached to the containment. This draws a negative pressure inside the containment and does not allow air from inside to escape. The drywall is carefully cut with a utility knife followed by a hand held HEPA vacuum to prevent Naples mold spore from becoming airborne. Any affected materials, drywall and insulation, must be bagged inside containment and thrown away outside the home.

Naples Mold spores are infinitely small, as small as .05 microns, and very aerodynamic. This is why containment and HEPA vacuuming and filtration are needed. A HEPA vacuum will capture particles as small as .03 microns. Naples Mold spores from affected drywall that become airborne will be carried throughout your home by air flow or through you’re A/C system and if they land on a wet surface with a food source will begin to grow.

Third: The structural materials behind your drywall may also be affected with Naples mold growth. Naples Mold will grow on any wood or paper product. If studs or rafters are affected they must be sanded down to clean wood and encapsulated with an antimicrobial sealer. This process should also be done in containment with negative pressure and HEPA filtration.

Finally: The affected areas should be treated with antimicrobial before the drywall is replaced. This includes any surfaces in the attic space that might have been wet with the slime Naples mold water. If you want a record of the Naples mold remediation process which states that the indoor air is free of Naples mold spores, from an indoor source at the time of remediation, an air test “clearance” should be performed before the reconstruction. This is very beneficial if and when you sell your home in the future. The future buyer will have documentation from a third party CIE (Certified Indoor Environmentalist) that the Naples mold issue was corrected following IICRC, Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration guidelines.

The smart home or condo owner hires a Professional Water Damage Restoration and Naples Mold Remediation Company that follows the IICRC guidelines, who has their restoration work certified by a CIE and is certified by The Indoor Air Quality Association as a leader in the field of Water damage restoration and Naples Mold remediation.

Naples Mold growth in the living area of your home is one of those things best left to the professional. Naples Mold growth that is not remediated properly may affect you and your family’s health and the value of your home.

Follow these practices to prevent Naples mold growth in your home:

    - If you have a flood or water damage be sure to dry the wet materials quickly and completely. Hire the best local Naples Water Damage Restoration Contractor.

    - Keep the humidity in your living space below 55%. Naples Mold will not grow without sufficient moisture. Use your A/C system and additional dehumidification if needed.

    - When you go away for more than two days set your thermostat at 78 degrees and if you have a humidistat set it at 50. Your Thermostat and humidistat are typically out of calibration by up to 8 degrees.

    H2O 911 Restoration - Naples Mold Remediation

Musty smell when he was putting holiday decorations away

A condominium owner in Naples Florida noticed a musty smell when he was putting holiday decorations away in a hall closet. He sprayed some Lysol in the closet and manually turned on the Air conditioning to get rid of the smell. The next weekend he decided to change the air conditioning filters and noticed that something was growing on the dust on the filter. So he decided to look around and found that the guest bedroom, near the hall closet, had Naples Florida mold growing on the wall below and to either side of the window. He called his association’s management company and they recommended a trusted Naples Florida water damage and mold remediation company. Further investigation by the Naples Florida mold remediation company found that the irrigation sprinkler head outside the guest bedroom window was mis-directed and had been spraying water on the stucco wall for months. This water had infiltrated the bedroom wall and wet the paper on the back of the drywall in the bedroom allowing Naples Florida mold to grow. Because the homeowners rarely went into the guest bedroom they did not notice until the musty odor alerted them.

The Naples Florida mold remediation company inspector also noticed the beginnings of surface mold growth in the master bath on the wall and under the sink in the kitchen. Could these three occurrences of Naples Florida mold growth be connected?

The Naples Florida mold remediation company inspector explained that when mold begins to grow inside your home because of a water intrusion it produces mold spores that are released into your indoor air. The return air register in the bedroom transported the Naples Florida mold spores through the Air Conditioning system to the rest of the home. The Naples Florida mold spores settled out of the air and landed on many surfaces. Surfaces that were wet and had a food source supplied the necessary ingredients to allow the mold spores to grow into a mold colony.

The master bathroom had a high humidity level every time the owners used the shower. Even though the Master bath dried out after each shower use the Naples Florida mold spores had enough moisture to begin to grow, not in the wall but on the surface. And each time the humidity went up the growth continued.

The kitchen sink area got wet every day and was wiped dry. The problem occurred because the cold water supply line to the sink fixture had a slight drip. This drip wet the cabinet floor. The cabinet is made of wood which is a food sources for mold.

The air conditioning unit kept the humidity low enough in the rest of the house to discourage any Naples Florida mold growth. So… what is required to fix this problem and prevent it from happening again?

Of course the first thing is to correct the direction of the sprinkler head. Then cover the return air register with poly. Next, containment should be built in the guest bedroom, from 6 mil poly, to prevent further spread of Naples Florida mold spores. This containment will enclose an “air scrubber” which will both filter the Naples Florida mold spores out of the air and create a negative pressure within the containment to prevent Naples Florida mold spores from escaping when workers enter. The workers, wearing personal protection equipment, will carefully cut out the affected drywall and other affected materials, bag it up inside the containment and remove it from the property. The wall cavity will be HEPA vacuumed and wiped down. Naples Florida Mold growth on any structural member will be sanded and encapsulated. The walls in the guest bedroom will be wiped down and/or HEPA vacuumed. Simultaneously the growth in the Master Bath and under the kitchen sink will be wiped down and treated.

Walls and surfaces in other areas may need a wipe down based on a visual inspection. Once the Naples Florida Mold remediation is completed air sampling by a third party, CIE Certified Indoor Environmentalist, is recommended. This test will verify that the inside source of Naples Florida mold spores has been removed. After this “clearance test” has been performed the rebuild of the walls can be accomplished. It is also recommended that your air conditioning duct system be cleaned and treated after a Naples Florida mold remediation. Depending on your insurance coverage, most or all of this work will be paid by your home owners insurance.

As you can see a proper plan to remediate Naples Florida mold growth from a home can be complicated and very technical. An effective Naples Florida mold remediation requires a company with experience, technical knowledge, specialized equipment and a commitment to meticulous application of procedures. The proof is in the clearance test. This test demonstrates that at the time of the testing all indoor sources of Naples Florida mold spores have been removed from your home.

The best Naples Florida remediation company in your area will be able and ready to verbally walk you through the procedures and explain why and how each step is necessary to correct and prevent future Naples Florida mold growth inside your home. Insist that your Naples Florida water damage and mold remediation contractor follow IICRC, Institute of Cleaning and Restoration Certification, procedures and that technicians be trained and certified by IICRC and IAQA, Indoor Air Quality Association. Naples Florida Water damage and mold growth can both damage your property and cause health issues for you and your family. Choose carefully.

Naples Mold spores can easily be breathed into the lungs

Naples Mold spores can easily be breathed into the lungs. Exposure to mold can cause cold-like symptoms and can trigger asthma attacks. It is not safe to live in a Naples home with high levels of mold in the air. Lengthy or repeated exposure to high levels of mold can also be harmful to health and may cause development of an allergy to mold. Allergic reaction to mold spores can occur even when the Naples mold is dead. Naples Mold must be removed to be safe.

Exposure to Naples mold should be minimized for all people but especially children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with respiratory problems. If you can smell a musty odor or see mold you should have a Naples Mold Professional assess the problem and propose removal and cleaning of surfaces and the air to prevent risk to your health.

Naples Mold grows on organic matter. It will grow on paper, dirt, wood and soap scum. Naples Mold likes wet materials and must have moisture to grow but high humidity alone is enough to support mold growth. Any flooded area that is not quickly and properly dried is likely to have mold growth. Interior and exterior walls need air circulation inside the wall to completely dry the structural materials. Any area that is stained from water should be examined for Naples mold growth. Peeling or bubbles in paint may also be an indication of wet walls.

Since people react to Naples mold whether it is living or dead, mold must be removed.

Naples Mold should be removed by a trained and certified Naples Mold Remediator. Water damage and Naples Mold remediation companies will have their technicians trained and certified by IAQA or other industry training leaders.

Naples Mold Trained technicians will protect themselves and other occupants during the removal and cleaning process. Containment will be constructed to segregate the air in the affected area from the air in the rest of the home.

The air conditioning vents will be covered to prevent cross contamination. All affected materials will be carefully removed using a “dustless demolition” procedure. Moldy materials will be bagged and removed from the home. Surfaces should be HEPA vacuumed and wiped down to insure all mold spores are removed.

After removal and cleaning the air may be tested by a third party Certified Indoor Environmentalist to certify that the air is clean of Naples mold spores.

Once the testing confirms a clean job reconstruction can begin. Drywall, insulation, and carpeting may need to be replaced to return the home to pre-loss condition. The contents and furnishings may also need to be cleaned to remove all Naples mold spores and damages.

To prevent future Naples mold growth the water source must be fixed. Since Naples mold spores are in the air normally and mold spores grow on any wet organic material, the only way to prevent mold growth is to keep things dry. Keep your air conditioning equipment in good condition to control the humidity in the air.

If you suspect there is Naples mold growing in your home call a local certified Water Damage and Naples Mold Remediation contractor to inspect your home.

Protect your family health and your home and contents. Keep Naples mold out of your home.
